Five Things To Do When Attending Your First Cannabis Conference

Summer may be officially here but conference season for the industry is ALL YEAR ROUND.

Going to a cannabis conference can be an informative experience, especially if it's your first time attending one. These types of events bring together some of the best folks in the business like investment professionals, weed enthusiasts, and experts to discuss the latest trends, innovations, and regulatory developments in the cannabis industry.

NECANN’s Illinois Cannabis Convention was dated June 2-3, 2023 and I was excited to see the difference between a conference in the cannabis industry versus the dozen conferences I’ve attended working in traditional software tech. The way they are organized are pretty much the same; panel discussions, expo floor, vendors.

I wanted to share my experience while helping others make the most of their first cannabis conference, because it's essential to come prepared and to have a plan. In this blog post, we'll explore the five things to do when attending your first cannabis conference.

  1. Plan Ahead and Do Some Research: Before attending a cannabis conference, it's really important to research the event, the schedule for the discussions, and the speakers that will be there. Get familiar with the different topics that will be covered so can you can make a list of the sessions you would like to attend. Planning ahead will help you make the most of your time so you don't miss out on valuable opportunities.

  2. Network and Connect: One of the main reasons to attend a cannabis conference is to network with industry professionals, entrepreneurs, and other like-minded individuals. Take advantage of the breaks and social events to connect with people who share your passion for the cannabis industry. Come prepared with business cards if you can or at least a way to share contact information.

  3. Attend Info Sessions and Workshops: Cannabis conferences typically feature info sessions and workshops led by industry experts. These sessions provide insights into various aspects of the cannabis industry, including cultivation techniques, regulatory updates, market trends, and more. Make sure to attend sessions that align with your interests and goals. Take notes, ask questions, and engage in discussions. Remember, these conferences offer a unique opportunity to learn from these professionals, so make the most of it.

  4. Explore the Expo Floor: These conferences will usually have an expo floor where companies showcase their products and services. Take the time to explore, visit different booths, and chat with as many people as you can. Be curious, ask questions, and seek demos or samples whenever possible.

  5. Take Care of Yourself: Attending a cannabis conference can feel overwhelming, with long days, crowded spaces, and potentially high energy levels. Please make sure to take care of yourself throughout the event. Stay hydrated, have snacks handy, and be mindful of your personal limits. Pace yourself, take breaks when needed, and prioritize self-care. This will ensure that you can fully get the knowledge and make the most of the conference experience.

Attending your first cannabis conference can be a great experience. By researching and planning ahead, networking, attending info sessions, exploring the expo floor, and taking care of yourself, you'll be well-prepared to make the most of the event. Remember to approach the conference with an open mind, embrace the opportunity to connect with industry professionals, and be ready to learn and grow within the beautiful world of cannabis. Enjoy it and make some memories!
